Arts practice and the ethics of care

Creativity and Care are fundamental human activities. Together they are key ingredients for our health and well-being.


Everyday, individuals, communities and organizations use the arts to promote health, manage it, prevent unhealthy conditions and treat them in minor and major circumstances.


We gather collaborators from around the world to examine and consider the meaning and practice of "What are the ethics of practicing art for the care and well-being of others?” 

A WHO Resource on Arts Practice and the Ethics of Care
This guide will offer questions to consider in creative projects within communities where care is an identified concern as well as strategies to support arts practitioners in caring for their own health and wellbeing.

This resource is being co-authored by 19 thought and practice leaders from across the globe and is being supported by the Creative Leadership Team at the Arts & Health Lab at New York University.

This guide will outline important questions to consider in the process of initiating, facilitating, completing, and evaluating projects in which care is the central aim. Insofar that caring for others is more sustainable when we also care for ourselves, the resource will also offer strategies to support the health and wellbeing of arts practitioners caring with and within communities.
